About the Taste Map
The taste map is a food checklist for the world. Every country has its most famous dish and its best-known street food – biryani and pani puri in India, shorshe ilish and fuchka in Bangladesh, sushi and takoyaki in Japan – each with a short note on what it is. Tick the ones you’ve tried and the country fills in on the world map. If you’ve marked countries on the Visited Places Map, it reminds you what to try from the places you’ve been.
How to use it
- 1 Find a country in the list or pick one from the buttons.
- 2 Tick the dish and the street food you’ve tried; the country colours in on the map.
- 3 Look at “You’ve been here” for dishes from countries you’ve visited but not tasted yet.
- 4 Share your taste map on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and more, or copy the link.
Frequently asked questions

Kibbeh. Bulgur and minced meat shells stuffed with spiced meat and pine nuts, fried or baked.
What street food is Syria known for?
Shawarma. Thin slices of spit-roasted chicken with garlic sauce and pickles in thin bread.
What is a famous sweet or dessert from Syria?
Halawet el jibn. Soft rolls of sweet cheese dough filled with cream and drizzled with syrup.
What do people drink in Syria?

What is a typical breakfast in Syria?

What other food should I try in Syria?
Muhammara and Kebab halabi.
How are the dishes chosen?
For each country we picked the dish most often called its national or best-known dish, and the snack people buy most from street stalls and carts. Many countries have more than one claim; we chose one so the map stays simple.
When does a country count as tasted?
As soon as you’ve tried one of its two dishes. The country turns light on the map with one and dark with both.
Is my taste map saved?
Yes, in this browser. Nothing is sent to our server. A share link carries the dishes in a short code, so anyone with the link sees your map.
How does it know which countries I’ve visited?
If you have marked countries on the Visited Places Map in this browser, the taste map reads that list and shows dishes from those countries you have not ticked yet.
