About the Visited Places Map

The visited places map turns your travels into a map you can share. Colour the countries you’ve been to on the world map, or open any of 200 country maps to colour its states, provinces, regions or districts – the 50 US states, the 47 prefectures of Japan, the 64 districts of Bangladesh and more. It counts how many you’ve been to, the share of the country and of its land, keeps a want-to-go list, and lets you send a friend the places they must see.

How to use it

  1. 1 Pick the world or a country.
  2. 2 Tap the places you’ve been to; switch to “Want to go” for the ones you dream of.
  3. 3 Switch to “Suggest to a friend” and tap the places they should not miss.
  4. 4 Share your map or your suggestions on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and more, or download it as an image.

Frequently asked questions

How is the percentage worked out?

The big number is the share of places you’ve marked: 12 of the 47 prefectures of Japan is 26%. Land area covered adds up the size of each place you’ve marked, so Alaska counts for far more of the United States than Rhode Island.

Is my map saved?

Yes, in this browser. Nothing is sent to our server. A share link carries the places themselves in a short code, so anyone with the link sees your map, and clearing your browser data clears your saved map.

How do I send travel suggestions to a friend?

Choose “Suggest to a friend”, tap the places they should visit, and send the link. When they open it they see your picks on the map, which of them they have already been to, and can add them all to their own want-to-go list.

Can I compare my map with a friend’s?

Yes. Open the map they shared and press “Compare with my map” to see the places you have both been to, only they have, and only you have.

Which countries have maps?

Every country with states, provinces, regions or districts – about 200 – plus the world map of countries. Islands far from the mainland, such as Hawaii or the Canary Islands, are shown in dashed boxes.
