About the Snow Day Calculator

The Snow Day Calculator estimates the chance that your school closes, or opens two hours late, on each of the next five school days. It reads the latest National Weather Service forecast for your ZIP code: the snow expected between noon the day before and 7 am, snow during the school day, ice from freezing rain, the lowest morning wind chill and any winter storm, blizzard, ice storm or extreme cold warning. Those are weighed against what your area is used to, because an inch of snow can close schools in Atlanta while Minneapolis stays open through six. You can also set your type of school and the snow days your district has already used.

How to use it

  1. 1 Enter the ZIP code of your school, or tap Use my location.
  2. 2 Choose public school, private school or college, and how many snow days have been used this winter.
  3. 3 Press Calculate to see the snow day and delay chance for the next school day and the four after it.
  4. 4 Check again the evening before: forecasts change, and your district makes the final call.

Frequently asked questions

How much snow does it take for a snow day in Kansas?

It depends on how used to snow your area is. In Kansas it takes 3 to 4.5 inches of snow before school to close most schools. Less snow can mean a 2-hour delay instead, and ice or blowing snow can close schools with less.

Will Wichita schools be closed tomorrow?

Schools in Wichita usually close for around 2.9 inches of overnight snow or wind chills below -14 °F. Check ZIP code 67201 above for the snow day chance from tomorrow’s forecast; your school district announces the final decision.

Will Topeka schools be closed tomorrow?

Schools in Topeka usually close for around 4 inches of overnight snow or wind chills below -20 °F. Check ZIP code 66601 above for the snow day chance from tomorrow’s forecast; your school district announces the final decision.

How accurate is the snow day calculator?

It is only as good as the forecast and the rules of thumb it uses. The evening before a storm the forecast is usually close, so the chance is most useful then; days further ahead are less certain. Districts also weigh things the forecast cannot see, such as road crews, buses and staff, so treat it as a guide, not an announcement.

How much snow does it take to cancel school?

It depends on where you live. Schools in the South may close for an inch of snow or a glaze of ice, the Mid-Atlantic for 2 to 3 inches, the Midwest and Northeast for 4 to 6 inches, and the snowiest northern districts only for 8 inches or more, or for dangerous wind chills.

Do schools close for cold weather?

Yes. Many districts close or delay when morning wind chills are low enough for frostbite at the bus stop, often around -20 to -35 °F in the northern states and much milder in the South.

What is a 2-hour delay?

A delayed start gives road crews time to clear and treat roads before buses run. It is common for light overnight snow, icy roads or bitter cold that is expected to ease by mid-morning.

Does the calculator work outside the US?

No. It uses the US National Weather Service forecast, which only covers the United States, so it needs a US ZIP code.
