Frequently asked questions

Where do these salaries come from?

From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) survey, which collects pay for about 1.1 million workplaces. The figures are from the May 2025 survey, published in 2026; the next release, for May 2026, is due in spring 2027.

What is the difference between median and average salary?

The median is the middle salary: half of workers earn more and half earn less. The average (mean) adds all salaries and divides by the number of workers, so a few very high earners pull it up. The median is usually the better guide to typical pay.

Do these salaries include tax?

No. They are gross wages before tax and deductions, and they leave out bonuses that are not paid regularly, benefits and self-employed workers. Use the take-home pay calculator to see the salary after federal and state tax.

What is the median salary in the US?

The median for all jobs in the US is $50,980 a year, or $24.51 an hour, in the May 2025 BLS survey. The average is $69,770.
