About the llms.txt Generator

llms.txt is a short Markdown file at the root of a site that gives AI tools a summary of the site and links to its most useful pages, so they don't have to guess from menus and ads. Enter your site to draft one from your home page and sitemap, or fill in the form yourself, then download the file and upload it next to robots.txt.

How to use it

  1. 1 Enter your site to draft from its sitemap, paste an existing llms.txt, or start from scratch.
  2. 2 Name the site, write a one-sentence summary, and keep the pages that matter most, each with a short note.
  3. 3 Copy or download llms.txt and upload it so it opens at yoursite.com/llms.txt.

Frequently asked questions

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed standard, published at llmstxt.org in 2024, for a Markdown file at /llms.txt. It starts with the site name as a heading and a one-line summary, then lists links to key pages under section headings, each with an optional note. AI tools and coding assistants can read it to find the right pages quickly.

Do ChatGPT, Claude, and Google use llms.txt?

No major AI company has said its crawlers rely on llms.txt, and Google has said it does not use it for Search. It is used by AI coding tools, documentation platforms, and agents that look for it, and it costs little to publish. Treat it as a helpful map, not a ranking factor.

Where do I put the llms.txt file?

Upload it to the root of your site so it opens at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt, the same folder as robots.txt. Serve it as plain text. On WordPress, upload it with your host's file manager or an SEO plugin that supports llms.txt.

What is the Optional section for?

The llms.txt format gives a section titled Optional a special meaning: AI tools may skip it when they need a shorter read. Put secondary pages there, such as the blog, changelog, or company pages.

What is the difference between llms.txt and robots.txt?

robots.txt tells crawlers which pages they may fetch. llms.txt tells AI tools which pages are worth reading and what each one covers. They work together: llms.txt cannot unblock a page that robots.txt blocks.

Is my draft sent to a server?

Only the site address you enter to draft from, so the server can read your public home page and sitemap. Everything you type into the form stays in your browser and is saved there so you can come back to it.
