About the Discount Calculator

The discount calculator shows what you pay after a discount and how much you save. It handles percent and fixed-amount discounts, an extra discount on top (like “an extra 10% off sale prices”), VAT or sales tax, and more than one item. It can also work out the percent off from two prices, or the original price from a sale price.

How to use it

  1. 1 Pick what you want to find: the sale price, the percent off, or the original price.
  2. 2 Enter the price and the discount. Open “Extra discount, tax & quantity” if you need them.
  3. 3 Read the final price and your savings, or tap a row in the quick table to try another discount.
  4. 4 Copy the share link to send the result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by the discount percent and divide by 100 to get the amount you save, then subtract it from the price. For example, 25% off 80 is 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20, so you pay 60.

Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The extra 10% comes off the price that is already reduced, so the total saving is 28%, not 30%. On a 100 item, 20% off gives 80, and 10% off 80 gives 72.

Is VAT added before or after the discount?

Usually after. Shops take the discount off first and charge VAT or sales tax on the reduced price, which is what this calculator does. If a price tag already includes VAT, leave the tax field empty.

How do I work out the percent off?

Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price, and multiply by 100. A price cut from 120 to 90 is (120 − 90) ÷ 120 × 100 = 25% off.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If you paid 75 after 25% off, the original price was 75 ÷ 0.75 = 100.
