About the Typing Test
The typing test measures how fast and how accurately you type, in English or in any of 11 Indian languages: Hindi, Bangla, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia and Urdu. Pick a passage and a time limit, type it out, and you get your words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and a list of every word you got wrong. It is good practice for government typing tests such as SSC, court and bank exams, and for job interviews.
How to use it
- 1 Choose your language, a passage and how long the test should run (1, 2 or 5 minutes, or the whole text).
- 2 Click in the box and start typing the passage. The clock starts with your first key, and each word turns green or red as you finish it.
- 3 When time is up you see your net and gross WPM, accuracy and mistakes. Press Try again or Next passage to keep practising.
Frequently asked questions
How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
For English, every five characters you type correctly, spaces included, count as one word, and that total is divided by the minutes taken. That is the standard used by most typing tests. Indian scripts fit a word into fewer characters, so for Hindi, Bangla and the other Indian languages the test counts real words: net WPM is correct words per minute and gross WPM counts every word you typed.
What is a good typing speed?
In English, around 40 WPM is average for people who type every day, 60 WPM is fast and professional typists reach 70–90 WPM. In Hindi and other Indian languages speeds are lower in words a minute: 25–30 WPM is good and 35 WPM or more is very fast.
What speed do government typing tests need?
It depends on the post, so always check the notice. As an example, the SSC CHSL typing test for LDC and JSA posts asks for 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi. Bangladesh government typist posts usually set a minimum Bangla and English speed in the job circular.
Which keyboard should I use for Hindi or other Indian languages?
Any keyboard that types Unicode works: Inscript, which comes with Windows and Android, Google Indic Keyboard, Gboard on a phone, or Tamil99 for Tamil. Old non-Unicode fonts such as Krutidev, Bijoy ANSI or Nudi’s ASCII fonts type English letters under the hood, so their text will not match the passage.
Can I type Bangla in English letters?
Yes. On the Bangla test choose “Avro phonetic” and type the words as they sound, as in Avro Keyboard: “ami” gives আমি and “bangladesh” gives বাংলাদেশ. Choose “My keyboard” if you use Bijoy, Probhat or a phone keyboard.
How is accuracy worked out?
Each word you type is compared letter by letter with the word it should be, counting a conjunct or a letter with its vowel sign as one letter. Accuracy is the share of letters that match, so one small slip in a long word costs less than a completely wrong word.
Can I practise with my own text?
Yes. Tick “Use my own text” and paste anything you want to practise, such as a past exam passage. Pasting into the typing box itself is turned off so the result stays honest.
