Average Calculator: Mean, Median & Mode
Paste a list of numbers to get the average with the working, plus the median, mode, range, and standard deviation. Add weights for a weighted average.
Separate with commas, spaces, or new lines. Use a dot for decimals.
One weight per number: credits, percentages, or how many times each value occurs.

About the Average Calculator
The average calculator finds the mean of any list of numbers and shows the working. It also gives the median, mode, range, sum, standard deviation, and geometric and harmonic means. Add weights to get a weighted average, for example for grades worth different amounts.
How to use it
- 1 Type or paste your numbers, separated by commas, spaces, or new lines.
- 2 Turn on “Weighted average” if some numbers count more than others, and enter one weight for each number.
- 3 Read the mean and the working, plus the median, mode, and spread.
- 4 Copy the share link to send the result to someone.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the average of a list of numbers?
Add all the numbers together, then divide by how many numbers there are. For 4, 8, and 9 the sum is 21 and there are 3 numbers, so the average is 21 ÷ 3 = 7.
What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle number once the list is sorted (or the average of the two middle numbers). The mode is the number that appears most often. With 1, 2, 2, 3, and 12 the mean is 4, the median is 2, and the mode is 2.
When should I use the median instead of the mean?
Use the median when a few very large or very small values would pull the mean away from what is typical, as with house prices or salaries. One value of 1,000,000 changes the mean a lot but barely moves the median.
How do I calculate a weighted average?
Multiply each number by its weight, add those products, and divide by the total of the weights. Scores of 80 (weight 30%) and 90 (weight 70%) give (80 × 30 + 90 × 70) ÷ 100 = 87.
What is the difference between population and sample standard deviation?
Use population standard deviation when your numbers are the whole group. Use sample standard deviation when they are a sample from a larger group: it divides by one less than the count, which gives a slightly larger, fairer estimate.
Why are the geometric and harmonic means missing?
They only work when every number is greater than zero. The geometric mean suits growth rates, and the harmonic mean suits averages of rates such as speeds over the same distance.
Can I use numbers with thousands separators?
No. A comma separates one number from the next, so 1,000 is read as 1 and 0. Type 1000 instead. Use a dot for decimals, as in 2.5.
