Mic Test

Check that your microphone works: see a live volume meter and sound wave, record a 5-second clip to hear how you sound, and see your mic’s settings. Nothing is uploaded; the sound stays on your device.

Not listening

Your microphone works. ✓

Say something, or tap near the mic…

We hear only a very quiet signal. Speak closer, raise the input volume in your system sound settings, or pick another mic.

No sound is coming in. The mic may be muted (check for a mute switch or button), or the wrong device is selected.

Hear yourself

Record 5 seconds and play it back to check how clear you sound.

About the Mic Test

The mic test listens to your microphone and shows a live volume meter and sound wave, so you can see straight away whether it picks you up. Record a short clip to hear how you sound on calls, compare with noise suppression on and off, and read the mic’s sample rate and settings. Everything runs in your browser; no sound is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. 1 Press “Test my microphone” and allow access when the browser asks.
  2. 2 Speak or tap near the mic and watch the meter: green means a good level.
  3. 3 Pick another mic from the list if you have more than one.
  4. 4 Press “Record 5 seconds” to hear yourself played back.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my microphone not working?

The most common causes are blocked permission, a muted mic, or the wrong device selected. Allow the microphone in the address bar, check for a mute button or switch on the headset or laptop, close apps such as Zoom or Teams that may be using it, and pick the right mic from the list.

How do I allow microphone access in my browser?

Click the lock or microphone icon at the left of the address bar and set Microphone to Allow, then reload. On Windows, also check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone; on a Mac, System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.

What is a good microphone level?

Normal speech should sit in the green, around -30 to -12 dB, with loud moments below 0 dB. If the meter turns red the sound is clipping and will crackle; move back or lower the input volume. If it barely moves, raise the input volume or move closer.

Is my voice recorded or uploaded?

No. The sound is analysed inside your browser. The 5-second test clip is kept in your browser’s memory only, so you can play it back, and it disappears when you leave the page.

What do echo cancellation and noise suppression do?

Video call apps turn them on to remove speaker echo and background noise, which can make a voice sound thinner. Untick the box to hear the raw microphone, as recording and streaming apps often use it.

Does the mic test work on phones?

Yes, in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. The phone asks for permission the first time. On iPhone, only one app can use the mic at a time, so end any call first.
