About the Lottery Tax Calculator
The Lottery Tax Calculator shows how much of a lottery prize you keep after federal and state income tax. Enter the prize, choose the lump sum or the 30-year annuity and pick your state: the prize is added to your other income and taxed on the 2026 federal and state brackets, so you see the real tax, not just the 24% withheld when you claim it. For the annuity it taxes each of the 30 yearly payments, which grow by 5% a year. Every state and Washington DC has its own page with a table of common prizes after tax.
How to use it

Frequently asked questions
Does Washington tax lottery winnings?
No. Washington has no state income tax, so lottery winnings are not taxed by the state. Federal tax still applies to every prize over $600, and 24% is withheld from prizes over $5,000.
How much is $1 million after taxes in Washington?
About $680,000 for a single filer with no other income: $320,000 of federal tax on the 2026 brackets, and no Washington state tax. Only $240,000 is withheld when you claim the prize, so set the rest aside for tax time.
How much tax do you pay on lottery winnings?
Lottery winnings are ordinary income. The federal government withholds 24% from prizes over $5,000, but a large prize is taxed at up to 37% in 2026, so you owe the difference when you file. Most states tax winnings as income too, from about 2.5% to over 10%, and New York City and Maryland counties add a local tax.
Is it better to take the lump sum or the annuity?
The lump sum (cash option) is roughly 45–50% of the advertised jackpot and is taxed all at once, almost all at 37%. The annuity pays the full jackpot in 30 payments over 29 years, each 5% bigger than the last. It pays more in total and the tax rate stays about the same, but you wait for the money and cannot invest it yourself.
How is the Powerball annuity paid?
Powerball and Mega Millions pay the annuity as one payment straight away and 29 more yearly payments, each 5% larger than the one before. On a $100 million jackpot the first payment is about $1.5 million and the last about $6.2 million, before tax.
Which states do not tax lottery winnings?
Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no state income tax on winnings, and Alaska and Nevada have none but no lottery either. California and Delaware do not tax prizes from their own state lottery.
Why was only 24% withheld from my prize?
The lottery withholds a flat 24% for federal tax on prizes over $5,000, whatever your bracket. On a large prize your real federal rate is closer to 37%, so you will owe around 13% more when you file, and you may need to make estimated tax payments.
What if I bought the ticket in another state?
The state where you bought the ticket can withhold its own tax as a non-resident. Your home state then taxes the prize too but usually gives you a credit for the tax paid to the other state, so in the end you pay about the higher of the two rates.
Is this calculator exact?
It is an estimate on the 2026 brackets for one tax year with the standard deduction. Itemized deductions (such as gambling losses or charity), credits, state phase-outs and future bracket changes for annuity payments are not included. Speak to a tax adviser before claiming a large prize.
