Rates: Tax Foundation, State and Local Sales Tax Rates, Midyear 2026, as of 1 July 2026. Average local rates are weighted by population. Your exact rate depends on the address where you buy or where the item is delivered, and some items, such as groceries, clothing and medicine, are taxed at a lower rate or not at all in many states. Check your state’s Department of Revenue for anything important.
About the Sales Tax Calculator
The Sales Tax Calculator adds US sales tax to a price, or takes it out of a total that already includes tax (a reverse sales tax calculation). Pick your state to start from its 2026 state rate and the average local rate that cities and counties add, then change the local rate to the exact rate where you shop. The result splits the tax into its state and local parts and always adds up to the cent. Rates come from the Tax Foundation’s midyear 2026 table, and every state and Washington DC has its own page with a table of the tax on common prices.

Frequently asked questions
What is the sales tax rate in Nebraska?
The Nebraska state sales tax rate is 5.5%. Cities and counties add their own tax, averaging 1.48%, for an average combined rate of 6.98% and up to 7.5% in the highest-tax areas. That ranks 27th highest of the 50 states.
How much is sales tax on $100 in Nebraska?
At the average 6.98% rate, sales tax on $100 is $6.98, so you pay $106.98 in total. At the state rate alone it is $5.50.
What is the highest sales tax rate in Nebraska?
The highest combined rate in Nebraska is about 7.5%: the 5.5% state rate plus the highest local rate of 2%. Check your exact rate with the Nebraska Department of Revenue.
How do I calculate sales tax?
Multiply the price by the sales tax rate and divide by 100. At 8.25%, the tax on $50 is 50 × 8.25 ÷ 100 = $4.13, so you pay $54.13. A shortcut is to multiply the price by 1.0825.
How do I work out the price before tax from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. If you paid $108.25 with 8.25% tax, the price before tax was 108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100 and the tax was $8.25. Taking 8.25% off the total gives the wrong answer, because the tax was worked out on the lower price.
Why is my sales tax higher than the state rate?
Most states let counties, cities and special districts add their own sales tax on top of the state rate. The combined rate is what you see on your receipt, so two shops in the same state can charge different rates.
Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Alaska lets towns and boroughs charge a local sales tax, and Montana resort towns charge a resort tax.
Which state has the highest sales tax?
California has the highest state rate, 7.25%. With local taxes added, Louisiana has the highest average combined rate (10.13%), followed by Tennessee, Washington, Arkansas and Alabama.
Is sales tax charged on shipping and online orders?
Online stores charge the sales tax of the address they ship to, including the local rate there. Whether shipping charges are taxed depends on the state.
