About the Time Zone Converter

The time zone converter turns a time in one place into the time in another, for 95 cities and the zones people write in emails, such as EST, PST, GMT and IST. Daylight saving is handled for you: the offsets come from the latest IANA time zone database, for the exact date you pick, including recent changes such as British Columbia keeping summer time all year. Add more clocks and the meeting planner shows which hours fall in everyone’s working day.

How to use it

  1. 1 Pick the place you are converting from and the place you are converting to.
  2. 2 Set the date and time in the first place, or press Now.
  3. 3 Read the time in the second place, with “next day” or “day before” when the date changes.
  4. 4 Add more cities to the world clock, then tap a green hour in the meeting planner to try it. Copy the link to share the time.

Frequently asked questions

Does the converter handle daylight saving time?

Yes. Every conversion uses the rules for the date you pick, so a time in July uses summer time in London and New York, and a time in January uses winter time. The difference between two places can change for a week or two each spring and autumn, because the US, Europe, and Australia change their clocks on different dates.

Is EST the same as ET?

Not quite. EST is Eastern Standard Time, UTC−5, used in winter. In summer the US East Coast uses EDT, UTC−4. Most people write “EST” all year to mean whatever the New York clock shows, so this converter treats EST, CST, MST and PST that way. For a fixed offset all year, convert from UTC instead.

What is the difference between GMT and UTC?

For everyday use, none: both are the time at 0° longitude with no daylight saving. UTC is the scientific standard kept by atomic clocks; GMT is the older name, still used in the UK and Ireland. Note that UK clocks show BST (UTC+1) in summer, so “London time” and “GMT” differ from late March to late October.

How far ahead is India of the US?

India (IST, UTC+5:30) is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of New York in winter and 10 hours 30 minutes ahead in summer, and 12 hours 30 minutes or 13 hours 30 minutes ahead of Los Angeles. India has no daylight saving, so the gap changes when US clocks do.

What is the best time for a meeting across time zones?

Add every city to the world clock and look at the meeting planner. Green hours fall between 9 AM and 5 PM in all of them. If no hour is green for everyone, as with New York and Sydney, pick a yellow hour, which is early morning or evening for someone, and rotate it between teams.

Why do some places have a 30 or 45 minute offset?

Some countries set their clocks to the middle of their land rather than a whole hour from UTC. India is UTC+5:30, Iran +3:30, Afghanistan +4:30, Nepal +5:45, and parts of Australia +9:30. The converter shows these to the minute.
