About the Zakat Calculator
The zakat calculator adds up the wealth zakat is paid on, takes off the debts you owe now, and checks the total against the nisab, the minimum amount after which zakat is due. Today’s international gold and silver prices are filled in for your currency, and gold can be entered in grams, tola or bhori, at 24, 22, 21 or 18 karat. Everything is worked out in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.
How to use it
- 1 Pick your currency, and whether to use the silver or gold nisab.
- 2 Enter the weight of your gold and silver, and change the price per gram if your jeweller’s price is different.
- 3 Add your cash, bank balances, money lent to others, shares, crypto and business stock.
- 4 Enter the debts and bills you owe now. If your wealth reaches the nisab, the zakat to pay is shown with each step.
Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab for zakat?
The nisab is the least wealth on which zakat is due: 87.48 grams of gold (7.5 tola) or 612.36 grams of silver (52.5 tola). Some organisations round these to 85 g and 595 g. If your zakatable wealth, after debts due now, is at or above the nisab for a full Islamic year, you pay 2.5% of it.
Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?
Many scholars, especially in the Hanafi school, advise the silver nisab when your wealth is a mix of cash, gold and other assets, because it is lower and so more people pay and more poor people benefit. Others use the gold nisab, which is closer to the value of the original 20 mithqal of gold. If you only own gold, the gold nisab applies. Follow the view of the scholar you trust.
How is zakat calculated?
Add up cash, bank balances, gold, silver, money owed to you, investments and business stock. Take off the debts you must pay now. If the result is at or above the nisab, zakat is 2.5% of it. For example, 500,000 taka of zakatable wealth means 12,500 taka of zakat.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery I wear?
Most Hanafi scholars say yes, zakat is due on all gold and silver, worn or not. The Shafi‘i, Maliki and Hanbali schools mostly exempt jewellery worn regularly in a normal amount. Zakat is paid on the pure gold content, so 10 grams of 22K gold counts as about 9.17 grams of pure gold.
Why is the rate 2.577% for a Gregorian year?
Zakat is due once every Islamic (lunar) year, about 354 days. A Gregorian year is about 11 days longer, so if you work out zakat on the same date each Gregorian year, scholars suggest 2.577% to make up the difference.
Is zakat due on my house, car or salary?
No zakat is due on the home you live in, your car, furniture, or tools you use for work. Salary is not zakatable as it comes in, but whatever you have saved from it on your zakat date counts as cash.
Who can receive zakat?
The Quran (9:60) names eight groups: the poor, the needy, zakat workers, those whose hearts are to be won over, freeing captives, people in debt, in the way of Allah, and stranded travellers. Zakat cannot be given to your parents, grandparents, children or spouse.
Is zakat al-fitr (fitrana) the same as zakat?
No. Zakat al-fitr is a small, fixed charity paid for each member of the family before the Eid prayer at the end of Ramadan, usually the price of one sa‘ (roughly 2–3 kg) of staple food such as wheat, dates or rice. The local Islamic authority announces the amount each year. This calculator is for zakat on wealth.
